Chapter Fifteen

Daisy entered Ooh La La to find Liz Roberts sitting on the sofa waiting for her. The formidable head of the Women’s Institute was reading a copy of Vogue magazine, her long, manicured fingers half-heartedly flicking through the pages. She got to her feet as soon as Daisy walked in.

“Liz,” Daisy said, taking off her coat and rubbing her hands together to warm them up. Her gloves were still in evidence with the police, and she was beginning to doubt she’d ever get them back. “This is a surprise.”

“Is there somewhere we can talk?” asked Liz in a hushed tone, dispensing with the small talk. She looked paler than usual beneath her makeup, and she’d chewed off most of the lipstick on her lower lip.

“Um, sure, give me a minute.” Daisy asked Penny to see to her next customer, who’d been shampooed and was waiting for her at a workstation, then went back to Liz. “We can talk in the kitchen.”

The tiny kitchen had become the hub of the investigation. Penny’s list of suspects was stuck inside the cupboard that housed the teacups, so she must be careful not to open it in front of Liz. It wouldn’t do for the president of the WI to see her name near the top. Even if it had been crossed out of late.

“What is it?” asked Daisy, once they’d closed the door. Under normal circumstances she’d offer Liz a cup of tea, but after that spiced pumpkin latte and the English breakfast tea at Paul’s, Daisy didn’t think she could stomach any more.

Liz pulled a folded-up note from her handbag and handed it to Daisy. “I found this in my post box this afternoon.”

Daisy’s pulse ticked up a notch. Liz had received a threatening note too. Slowly, she opened it, careful to keep her expression neutral. Sure enough, the word MURDERER was written across the top in the now-familiar thick black ink. Once again, the watermark was present.

“What does it mean?” Liz whispered, her eyes boring into Daisy’s.

Daisy’s mind went into overdrive. Was the person responsible randomly sending a note to everyone who might have had an opportunity to murder Melanie? And if so, what was their aim? To deflect suspicion off themselves or confuse the investigation by misleading the police? Or was there another reason she hadn’t thought of yet?

“I don’t know.” Daisy turned the note over and inspected the back before returning it to Liz. It was blank, just like hers and Yvette’s. “How do you know it’s for you and not your husband?”

“Because Roy’s not home during the day. He works in the city, so he leaves early and gets back after seven. They must have known I’d find it.”

She had a point. None of the notes were addressed to anyone in particular, but they had been left in such a way that the intended person would find them. Hers through her front door, Yvette’s at the boutique, and Liz’s at her house.

“We should call the police,” Daisy said.
